More to come!!
So I guess I'll update this now before it really becomes five years since my last journal entry. There. Done. That was easy.
Kind of. Except for the dead part. I hadn't died, so...I'm just back. Less exciting story, I know, but hey, had to get your attention somehow. Because I'm obviously an attention whore, what with my posting every six months or so. Ha. Seriously, I will try to update more often. I do keep up better with my site, so if you care to, you can bookmark joelharrisart.com and check up on my new work there. I'm in the process of overhauling the entire site's design, so bear with me.

My wife and I closed on our first house this past Friday. It's only been 5 days, yet it feels like so much longer, as we've been painting, moving boxes, etc pretty much nonstop.

In some other news, I am working on my creator-owned comic, which I will preview here on DevArt in the coming month or so. Without giving away too much of the story, it's essentially a pulp detective style book set in the late 1940's, focusing equally on case matter and characterization. I'm doing it all myself, from writing to art, to lettering and beyond. If anyone would like to collaborate with me in any aspect, please drop me a line (jmharrisart@gmail.com).

That's it for now. Will update soon...promise!

Okay, the two aren't actually related. Hmm...unless I'm going senile...but I digress. I just happen to have shaved my head the day after my birthday. But I'll get into that later.

My birthday was November 2nd. I'm now the ripe old age of 32. I know that in about 20 years or so I'll look back on these days and realize just how young I was, but for now; I'm feeling every one of the 32 years I've walked this earth. Well, I crawled and fumbled around the earth for the first year or so, but...still. You know what I'm saying.

On to the bald thing. It just so happens that I'm rather thrifty with my money, and I used to cut my own hair (fairly well, I might add) for years. So last Friday, I decided instead of going to the er, haircuttery that I've gone to for the past 4 or 5 years, I'd trim my hair myself. I had a thick head of hair at this point, and my wife was strongly hinting that I needed to get it cut.

Well.

I didn't have hair clippers handy, so I used my adjustable beard trimmer, intending only to thin out the sides and back of my hair. The trimmer guard got full of hair rather quickly, so I took the guard off to clean it out, and er...I forgot to put the guard back on when I resumed "trimming"....

BUZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Gone was a wide strip of hair on the side of my head. Revealed was my pale scalp which hadn't seen the sun since 1975.

There was nothing left to do but go all the way. So I am now bald, and you know what? I kind of like it. My wife doesn't necessarily want me to keep the look, but she sure does enjoy rubbing my head, and I can't complain about that, can I?

But this is nothing new. It's just that the Internet puts a fine point on it.

Back in the day, before I was computer savvy, I grew up in a relatively small town where I realized there were a lot of idiots in society, but I never quite realized how ignorant people could be until I got online (in the late 90's). And now the 'net is even more proliferated by absolute rubbish.

I was just on YouTube (for some reason) and it seems that every other comment posted on an otherwise innoculous video is ignorance/racism/rudeness simply for the sake of being an asshole. I don't understand that mindset. The scary thing is that it'd be easier to imagine that these comments are made by prepubescent children that think they are being provocative and shocking because it's cool; but in reality, I know that far too many adults have this same mindset. It's kind of sad and disheartening.

With the global community being more and more a reality thanks to the 24 hour news networks, reality TV and everyone and their cousin having a blog or other means of expression on the Internet...

Well, it is a rather scary and bleak world we're living in. I almost wish we could regress our technological acumen so that we didn't have this sense of omniscience. A blind eye sees less evil.

I used to be an idealist. Now...not so much.
If ever you're bored, might I suggest you do what I did today:

Go to a department store's digital camera section and review each camera's stored photos. You'll find several shots of people whose significant others have tested the camera quality on by snapping them, as well as a lot of blank faces from people testing the camera with themselves as the subject.

For added fun, take a photo of yourself doing something mischievous for others to find and scratch their head at.

I had a discussion with another Deviant about these, which are kind of hard to find unless you know where to look. Anyway, I checked out MisterArt.com (great place) and found them there, so thought I'd pass on that info.
Figured I'd update, because my last one is getting annoying every time I look at my page. Man, there are a lot of great artists on DA. Overwhelming, really...on one hand, it makes me want to take my art to the next level, and on the other hand, it makes me want to stop altogether, because I suck at applying my full energies and abilities to my art, and it shows. Arghhh...
It's been forever and a day since I updated my DevArt. Like 3+ years to be exact. That's gonna change...starting...NOW.

Just agreed to color the ongoing title "Young Samurais" for Reyven Studios [link] (which I'm now part of).  Need to get a new PC so I can work faster and make more $$ to move west to be with my gal. If you're reading this- I love you!  If not, well... I still love you!

Ok... I'll stop now, I promise. JH

Hehe... 2 more days until I head out to Illinois for Nickie's graduation. I'm unbelievably excited to see her. It's been 5 looong months, and I don't think I could stand to be apart for much longer, so this is much needed.

Feeling better about my coloring too, as I've adapted my style a bit. It's actually allowing much quicker turn-around time, which is just a double bonus. Things are going well. Finally!
